Amethyst is a vibrant purple gemstone belonging to the quartz family that owes its vivid violet colour to the presence of manganese and impurities of iron found within the mineral. Mined in Brazil, Africa, Korea and India; it has been used since antiquity as a highly valuable “Gem of Fire" and at times in history it cost as much as a Diamond.
The name Amethyst comes from the Greek word améthystos, meaning "not intoxicated", and for this reason both the Ancient Greek and Romans would adorn their goblets with Amethyst, believing it would lead to the wine, drunk from the cups, to lessen the effect the of intoxication and promote a more sober mindset.
This led the crystal to be associated with the Roman God of Wine; Bacchus who its said is responsible for creating the lilac colouration of the gemstone itself.
"The ancient story tells of a young maiden Amethystos crossing paths with Bacchus on her way to worship at the local temple. Bacchus, finding her incredibly alluring, attempted to covet her beauty, which quickly turned to anger as she refused him, leading him to provoke his protective tigers to attack. Frightened and confused Amethystos prayed to the Goddess Diana, the protector of women to keep her safe. Diana heard the call and turned the maiden into a clear quartz crystals, making her impenetrable to the tigers attack. Defeated and remorseful, Bacchus poured his beloved wine over the crystal in repent, transforming her into the revered purple gem we now know as Amethyst."
Among the Ancient Egyptians the stone was consider protective, used in amulets and jewellery as well as being adorned by pharaohs to enhance spiritual growth. They also associated the stone with their deity Hathor, the goddess of love and beauty, and it was often found on shrines or statues depicting her.
