LESSON 01 · THE ORACLE WITHIN
What if the answer you travelled so far to find was never meant to be given to you?
At the Temple of the Oracle in Siwa, I found myself standing among stones that had witnessed centuries of questions. People had crossed the desert to consult the oracle of Amun. I had made my own journey carrying questions that were harder to put into words: Was I following the right path? Could I trust what I felt? And how could I tell the difference between a genuine inner knowing and simply wanting something to be true?
I love the mystery of places like Siwa. But I don't believe we need to pretend that every feeling is a message, or that an ancient temple owes us an answer. Sometimes the greatest gift of a sacred place is the silence it creates around a question.
What Is the Oracle Within?
In ancient Egypt, an oracle was not simply another word for intuition. Oracular consultation belonged to particular religious practices and traditions. The oracle at Siwa was associated with Amun, and Alexander the Great's visit became one of its most famous stories.
When I speak of the oracle within, I'm using the phrase as a modern spiritual metaphor. It is not a claim that the ancient Egyptians taught this exact practice. For me, it describes the quiet capacity to pay attention to ourselves: our feelings, memories, values, experience and the questions we keep returning to.
Intuition can be meaningful, but it is not infallible. Fear can sound urgent. Hope can sound certain. Old wounds can make familiar situations feel like destiny. Learning to listen also means learning to question what we hear.
Listening Is Not the Same as Obeying
One of the things Egypt has taught me is to slow down. I can sit beneath a vast sky, look at the desert stretching away from me, and realise that I don't need to make a decision in the very moment a thought appears.
We can honour an impression without acting on it. We can notice a pattern without turning it into a prophecy. We can use tarot, meditation, Reiki or ritual as tools for reflection while still allowing evidence, practical wisdom and other people's perspectives into our decisions.
This, to me, is a deeper kind of trust: not the promise that I will always be right, but the knowledge that I can be present with uncertainty.
The Journal as a Sacred Mirror
During my time in Siwa I filled pages with drawings, notes, shapes and reflections. Some made sense immediately. Others didn't. Looking back, the value was not that each mark contained a hidden prediction. It was that I had given myself space to notice what was happening inside me.
A journal does not need to be beautiful or organised. It can hold contradictions. It can record what you believed yesterday and what you understand differently today. It becomes a record of a relationship with yourself.
Mystery School Practice · Seven Minutes of Inner Listening
Take your journal and find a quiet place. You don't need a special object, a ritual tool or a particular belief to begin.
- Arrive. Spend one minute noticing your breath and the feeling of your feet on the ground.
- Name the question. Write down one thing you have been seeking reassurance about.
- Notice. For two minutes, write what arises without editing it. Include doubts and uncomfortable feelings too.
- Discern. Ask: What do I know? What am I assuming? What would I need to check before acting?
- Choose. Finish with one small, kind, practical next step. It is fine if that step is simply to wait.
Three Questions for Your Oracle Journal
- Where am I asking someone else to give me permission to trust myself?
- What feels quietly true after the urgency of fear has passed?
- What could I learn before deciding what this feeling means?
I went to Siwa drawn by the story of an ancient oracle. I came away remembering that the most important questions are not always answered in a single moment.
Sometimes the mystery is not in receiving a message. It is in becoming willing to listen.
